Farm and Apples

Welcome back to the classroom!
We spent a good 2 weeks reading, singing, and learning about farms and farm animals.
The first week, we read and sang "Old MacDonald Had a Farm",
and used some flannel board pieces for the kids to retell the song/story.

We made a song in a bag later that week, with animals from the song.
Here we are coloring the animals to go in the bags.
We worked on using 1:1 correspondence in a math center.
They had to give each pig an apple and each chicken a kernel of corn.

For cooking that week, we made butter. You use heavy cream, put it in a small jar or container with a marble (that helps "stir" everything), and shake until it turns to butter. Here is the recipe and directions.

We spread it on saltines. It was so yummy!

We painted some farm animals.

The next week, we read a new story…Mrs. Wishy Washy.
Here is a link to the story on you tube.

This story is about 3 farm animals who go in the mud,
and Mrs. Wishy Washy gives them a bath, saying "wishy washy, wishy washy!"
We put these flannel board and dramatic play sets in the books center too, for the week.

We painted some pigs to look muddy!

At the end of the second farming week, we cooked scrambled eggs.

Other activities…stamping letters in play doh...

playing games at the Thursday games center…
this one is called Scatterpiller Scramble
We have been doing some lessons the past couple of weeks
learning about the concepts "same" and "different".
In this activity, we made impressions in play doh by pressing objects into play doh,
and I had to "guess" what the object was based on the print.
I had the same objects and had to match my object that was the same as their print.

This is our fine motor center. We either have a teacher-led math or literacy center,
or a fine motor activity. When finished, the kids can choose puzzles to do.

On Tuesdays, we typically play a group game, usually the same game for 3-4 weeks in a row, so that the kids really learn how to play by having multiple chances to practice.
This month we've been playing Duck, Duck, Goose.
A literacy activity with Mrs. Sageser…letter bingo.
Some kids were identifying letters, some kids were matching them.
Another activity we did was listening to words and seeing pictures, to determine if the were the same or different. This concept is really important in both math and literacy, and is somewhat abstract, so we have practiced it multiple times.
I passed out animal tiles to the kids. I then named a pair of animals, and showed a picture of one of them. If they were the same, the child with that animal got to come and put it on the magnetic box.

We practice letter recognition, letter sounds, as well as how to build, form, and write letters.

Here we are building letter "E" with the foam letter pieces: big lines and little lines.

This week we learned about apples.
Everyone brought in an apple, and we did lots of apple activities.
Our math center was sorting and counting apples: red/green, stem/no stem.

We also had an apple sensory bin.
The kids could scoop the beans, count the apples, polish the apples, etc.

We painted apples with our dot sponge painters.

This was another same and different activity.
I had matching pairs of items under the cups, and they picked two,
looking for two items that were the "same". If they didn't match, we said they were "different".
Here we are on Thursday, playing Pirate Pop-Up.
You put the swords in the barrel, and eventually the pirate pops up!
It always startles me and I make a big deal squealing about it. Fun times!
This class has really nice play skills,
and I often can leave them alone to play with only nearby adult supervision.

Josiah and Lucas built a really nice structure in the blocks center.
At the end of apple week, we had an apple tasting.
Mrs. Sageser let everyone taste to see if they like red ones or green ones better.
We used Mrs. Headden's apple peeler/corer/slicer.
Everyone got a chance to turn the crank.

The skin came off in one long "apple snake"!
 So fun!
Thanks for visiting and we'll see you next time!
